Basic, Better, Best? What do you think?

All three are Victorian pine chests of drawers, practical pieces that would fit into most homes, especially here in the Cotswold's - so what is the difference and how much did they make?

Basic – No 3
Our basic chest, whilst perfectly useable, needed a bit of TLC.  The handles were replacements, being at least the third set. You can see the holes where previous knob handles had been and some pin holes around them where another set were placed. There was a bit of damage to one of the drawer fronts and the top had a whiteish look to it. A perfect upcycling lot.  A trip to the local DIY store for some paint, new handles, etc. and some elbow grease would have this looking great in no time. All this was reflected in the price of £65 that it cost the buyer.

Better - No 2
This chest had a good light colour, a plain top with moulded edge and rounded corners, this time with knob handles, although probably not the originals as they are a little too close to the key holes! It was a nice compact size with a drawer configuration of two small above two long drawers on a solid plinth base, so a useful piece. Clean, tidy and ready to go. At £165 still considerably cheaper than most high street furniture stores.

Best - No 1
A wonderful mid 19th Century chest that had everyone looking at it when up for sale. The original yellow paint work was a rarity, highlighted with blue and brown decoration which set off the dark wood handles with mother of pearl buttons and similar feet. The interesting row of three bonnet drawers at the top added to the appeal. Full of character and charm from 150 plus years of a life well lived and used. Unsurprisingly, there was plenty of bidding both online and on the phone, the buyer eventually paying just over £1000 for it.

So, were you right? Did the one you like the most, make the most?
