FANS of hit TV show The Tudors who want to recreate the look of Henry VIII’s palace in their own home now have the chance.
A large collection of dark oak wood panelling in the Tudor style will go under the hammer at the Cirencester salerooms of Moore Allen & Innocent next week.
The panelling comes from a period townhouse in nearby Cheltenham, and was produced in the Victorian era.
Auctioneer Philip Allwood said: “To have this panelling made for your home would cost thousands of pounds. Collectors have the chance to own this ornate panelling for hundreds. In the right home this would be the ultimate feature.”
The panelling carries an estimate of £300 to £500.
The sale also features a large collection of children’s furniture from the renowned manufacturer Dragon of Walton Street, London. The decorated pine furniture typically costs more than £1,000 a piece when bought new.
Taken from a prestigious residential address in central London, this collection of beds, bookcases, chests of drawers and bookcases will go under the hammer with estimates starting at £50 for some lots.
One curious item going under the hammer is an early 19th century bill box. The mahogany box on a hinged lid has inlaid brass plaques bearing the words ‘bills’, ‘unpaid’ and ‘paid’, the latter of which are placed over slots for correspondence.
The box is raised on a ring turned column and a rectangular plinth with squat bun feet and carries an estimate of £150 to £250.
“In all my years in the business, I have never seen one of these,” said Philip. “I would hazard an educated guess that it was used by someone in charge of accounts at a country house who wanted a more sophisticated system than sticking bills behind the clock on the mantelpiece!”
The sale starts at 9.30am on Friday, October 10 at the Moore Allen & Innocent salerooms in Norcote, Cirencester.
