Our last sale of the year was our Selected antique sale on the 8th December and was a huge success, proving that quality and not quantity count.
The star lot of the sale was a late 17th Century English lantern clock (illustrated below) with musical movement, consigned from a local private manor house. Bidding in the room started at £3000 but soon escalated and phone bidders became involved, the hammer finally went down at £22,000.
Among the other lots that attracted attention included a fine circa 1900 micro mosaic panel depicting a colourful floral spray in a pierced basket realising £8,800 (illustrated below), a seven stone platinum and diamond ring and a pair of diamond earrings achieving £1,800 and £1,050 respectively and a Scottish laburnum and ivory snuff mull (one of a collection in the sale including some interestingly in the shape of shoes) made a hammer price of £1,700. All small but perfectly formed Christmas stocking fillers.
The 18th Century Continental silk work that was mentioned and illustrated in our last bulletin made £1,200 being fought for in the room by two very determined bidders.
In the ceramics section a collection of Doulton Lambeth stoneware did well. A tyg by Hannah E Barlow decorated with three panels depicting dogs heads achieved £840.
Looking forward to 2007 we are already setting up our first Antique and General sale
of the year, to be held on the 5th January.
