Blushers all round at Cotswold auction

A collection of six silver and enamelled compacts from the early 20th century, which made £170There were blushers all round at a Cotswold auction last week... after hundreds of powder puff cases went under the hammer.

A collection of around 300 assorted make-up compacts from the mid 20th century – including some by the highly collectable firm Stratton of Mayfair  - were sold in six lots valued at between £40 to £60 each, but achieved hammer prices of up to £250 per lot.

Meanwhile the best examples from the collection – six silver and enamelled compacts from the early 20th century – were singled out for sale as a separate lot and made £170.

Shiny trinkets proved generally popular at the Moore Allen & Innocent sale on Friday, January 21.

An 18-carat gold cased pocket watch, sold together with two 9-carat gold ladies wristwatches, a silver wristwatch face, lockets, pendants and a bracelet made the fourth highest price of the day, at £860.

And an 18-carat gold pen set, featuring the crest of Oman beneath a crown, also made the coveted Top Ten, when the gavel fell at £620.

But furniture continued to command the top spots. A modern ebonised maple dining suite in the Rennie Mackintosh style by Stewart Linford of High Wycombe, who counts The Queen among his customers, was bought for £1,600 – double the £500 to £800 estimate – by a collector of the Linford furniture.

A burgundy Persian silk rug – measuring over two metres long – sold for £1,250, while proving that size isn't everything a modern two-seat scroll arm sofa in the Regency taste sold for £900, while it's larger three-seater counterpart achieved £820.

And an 18th century oak long case clock by John Evan of Aberystwyth struck a chord with collectors. Sold on behalf of the charity Sue Ryder Care, it achieved £660 – around double its £300 to £400 estimate.

Auctioneers reported a busy and profitable sale – continuing  a trend started by the first sale of the year a fortnight earlier – with antiques and collectables worth a total of £49,000 being sold on the day.

The next auction at Moore Allen & Innocent is the Sporting Sale on Friday, February 4.  For more information about buying and selling at auction, log on to  www.mooreallen.co.uk/furniturefinearts
